Smart Technologies for Smart Cities– The Third series in the Academic Week
On Wednesday Oct 13, SUPD had the honor to host Professor Anthony G.O. Yeh for a talk on Smart Technologies for Smart Cities. This is the third in the series of talks for Academia Week. The talk started promptly at 10.30am, after an introduction by our very own head of school, Professor Li Guicai. Room 301 was packed with students and professors, eager to engage in an informational session.
 
Professor Yeh is from the Department of Urban Planning and Design and the Center of Urban Studies and Urban Planning at The University of Hong Kong. He is also a British Academy. Professor Yeh started the presentation with a comprehensive definition of smart cities. Six characteristics of smart city include aspects such as people, mobility, economy, environment, living and governance. Countries such as the EU and the United States were early in the game of smart cities, while Singapore is the major city in Southeast Asia. Japan and Korea have also developed plans such as U-Japan, I-Japan and U-Korea in recent years. As for China, a first round of 90 smart cities were released by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Rural Development in January 2013.

What is the objective of constructing a smart city? As Professor Yeh explained it, it is a new way of urbanization. Smart technologies are used for data collection, using 3S (GIS, GPS, RS), sensor technology, Internet of Things. Information processing such as cloud computing, data mining, machine learning is also a display of smart technologies. These can be used to provide services for the general public, government agencies, businesses and industries.  Our everyday usage of applications and technology is a display of smart city too. Professor Yeh gave us many examples of how smart technologies operate in our daily lives. For instance, indoor navigation is used for indoor emergency evacuation route planning, and for navigation in big shopping centers and museums. In the health industry, wearable sensors such as accelerometer and gyroscopes are present in health applications.
 
Closer to the end of the talk, Professor Yeh gave more specific examples of how smart technologies are applied in urban planning and design, which was what most students present were majoring in. Transport planning is an example; with human GPS activity data, trip generation, trip distribution and route assignment are just some of the applications. There are endless possibilities in urban management too. For example, smart navigation, smart tourism and many more.

 
Professor Yeh gave us a brief peek into the vast and deep world of smart technologies, and reminded us of how our everyday lives are already tied to it. For students of SUPD, it was a wonderful opportunity to get inspired and learn how to incorporate smart technologies into what we learn.
