“The History And New Research Trends Of Ecosystem Ecology”– The second series in the Academic Week
On the morning of September 24, the School of Urban Planning and Design welcomed the distinguished Professor Shuli Niu, as the speaker of the Academic Week. Professor Niu is a professor at the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research in Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The main content of the lecture was divided into three parts: the history of ecology, the research trends of ecosystem ecology and the future research directions of ecosystem ecology.

The lecture opened with a welcoming speech and introduction from SUPD’s Professor Han Xili. After that, in order to tell us that the ecology originates from our curiosity about nature, Professor Niu started the lecture with stories about Darwin and Humboldt who contributed to the development of ecology.

Next, Professor Niu made a detailed introduction to the history of ecosystem ecology. Professor Niu then told us that the ecosystem is a dynamic circulatory system composed of plants, animals, microorganisms and inorganic substances, and that ecosystem ecology plays a connecting role for the research of ecology.

Professor Niu moved on to introduce the research trends of ecosystem ecology. The researches about ecosystem and global environmental change are hot and important spots in ecosystem ecology. And ecological forecast is a new trend and research edge of ecosystem ecology. Furthermore, more and more researchers have focused on Macrosystem Ecology which has larger scales and scopes on research with the help of big data.

In the last part of the lecture, Professor Niu introduced the change of visual angles in ecosystem ecology. Along with the society's need for ecosystem ecology, the researches of ecosystem ecology are beginning to serve the economic, social development and national interests, and the regulation and control of the ecosystem are becoming more and more important.

Professor Niu’s engaging presentation captured the attention of all who was there. Towards the end of the presentation, she kindly offered to answer and discuss any questions that the students might have. The morning concluded with a heartfelt round of applause as the students showed their appreciation for the time and effort that Professor Niu took to present her knowledge and enrich the students.
