【Academic Lectures】Associate Professor Meekam Ng
On December 13, at 2 PM,Dr. MeeKam Ng of the Chinese University of Hong Kong gave a speech called 《Place-making and ABCD》to the students of SUPD. As an expertof urban planning, she introduced what makes a place and how to plan an asset-based community. Dr. Zhou was the host.

Dr. MeeKam Ng is Vice-Chairman of the Department of Geography and Resource Management and Director of Urban Studies Programme at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.  She is a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), a fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Planners (HKIP) and a member of the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design.  She has completed over 20 research projects and published 10 authored or edited manuscripts or books, and over 90 refereed journal articles and book chapters on planning, governance and sustainability issues in Hong Kong, China, Singapore and Taiwan.

At first,Dr. MeeKam Ng cited the theory of William H. Whyte, she said “making a place for people always counts”. And then, she explained three levels of place-making, namely, Level G(Government Plan), Level M(Spatial Practice) and Level P(Lived Spaces). Through them, Level P concerns more about people. Finally, she introduced some concept and 11 principles of creating a great public place.
After that, Dr. MeeKam analyzed the reconstruction of the Bryant Park.
At the end of the speech, Dr. MeeKam answered some questions of the students. She voiced her views on the place-making of Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School and Street Venders, and also Showed great concern of the development of the cites of China.
